I am throwing an idea around about doing the same as empire diesel has with the duramax, powerstroke, and soon Cummins engines. I fired this idea out at fred's tdi forum with not much interest of enthusiasm in response (i figure here would be the best place).
you can, but i would recommend that only with a small turbo such as a VNT-15. with a regular 1.6 turbo, there will be a lot of off boost smoke, but on boost power should be the same as a TD pump if everything is set right. a larger downpipe would help with the turbo lag, but a true TD pump is what you want.

The rest of engines are all 5 or 6 cyl so I guess they will need even more work. Best bet is to upgrade a chip, fit a intercooler of a higher powered model (maybe turbo aswell) along with the bigger injectors and you will probably gain quite a bit of power (more than that LT you drove I presume). From factory engine came with 61 hp and 140 NM. Bone stock lupo 3L or audi A2 3L can deliver max roughly 90 hp and 250 Nm. With straigth piping you can get the power roughly to 95 hp.
