It started around November last year, just a very slight rattle on start up. It's got progressively worse. Sometimes, it sounds quick nasty, very metallic and angry. it only lasts for less than a second and then it's as normal as can be. it happens when the engine is warm now too, but not as bad. I had my egr replaced under warranty by Kia, at the time I did a lot of googling and found a Kia TSB that sai it will take approximately 1000 miles for the ECU to adjust its parameters to the new egr, a software update was also applied at the same time as the egr being fitted. Unfortunately engine emission lights merely let you know there is a problem with something. To know what you need a code reader. You mention filter in your title, so it could be a DPF problem, if it is the engine light it could be EGR valve, turbo issues, blocked air pipework, injectors etc.

I get the P0401 code all the time (restricted air flow to egr ) , I also have a 16cdti ,I cleaned out the metal looking Flexy pipe at back of engine right hand side , it did help for about 1000 mls but recently popped the code up again thinking about spending £110 on a terraclean.
