Any way you look at it, a diesel truck emitting black smoke is not going to be getting the optimal fuel mileage it should be getting. Most common causes of black smoke are faulty injectors, a faulty injector pump, a bad air filter (causing not enough oxygen to be supplied), a bad EGR valve (causing the valves to clog) or even a bad turbocharger.
typical symptons of EGR Valve fault is Erratic idleing, possible stalling at junctions, and of course the EML light with a fault code pointing to it.

I had my egr replaced under warranty by Kia, at the time I did a lot of googling and found a Kia TSB that sai it will take approximately 1000 miles for the ECU to adjust its parameters to the new egr, a software update was also applied at the same time as the egr being fitted. Caren\'s 2012.Unfortunately engine emission lights merely let you know there is a problem with something. To know what you need a code reader. You mention filter in your title, so it could be a DPF problem, if it is the engine light it could be EGR valve, turbo issues, blocked air pipework, injectors etc.
